Assumption University Appoints New Leaders

Dr. Lois Smedick, Chair of the Board of Governors of Assumption University in Windsor, is pleased to announce that Fr. George Smith, C.S.B., Superior General of the Congregation of St. Basil, has appointed Fr. Thomas Rosica, C.S.B. as President of Assumption University. She is also pleased to announce that the Board of Governors has appointed Fr. Leo Walsh, C.S.B. as Vice-President, Academic. Fr. Rosica succeeds Fr. Paul Rennick, C.S.B., who has concluded a four-year term as President of Assumption.

Fr. Rosica, well known in the Windsor area and across Canada, is a scripture scholar, university lecturer and author. Formerly Executive Director and Pastor of the Newman Centre at the University of Toronto from 1994-2000, Fr. Rosica served as National Director and Chief Executive Officer of World Youth Day 2002 and the Papal Visit to Canada in 2002. He is currently the C.E.O. of the Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation and Television Network in Canada. He will continue in his leadership role at Salt and Light Television as he begins his work with Assumption University in December 2011.

Fr. J. Leo Walsh, C.S.B., professor emeritus of Moral Theology at the University of St. Michael’s College in Toronto, has been pastor of St. Paul’s Church in LaSalle, Ontario since 2003. Fr. Walsh is associated with the Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute in Toronto and is a frequent contributor to its publications. He will continue as pastor of St. Paul’s as he assumes his new role at Assumption University effective immediately.

Fr. Joseph Quinn, C.S.B., professor emeritus of English at the University of Windsor, will serve as interim President of Assumption University until December 1, 2011.

For over 150 years Assumption University, under the administration of the Basilian Fathers, has provided a wide range of educational opportunities to the people of the Windsor and Essex County region. Assumption began as a College in the classical French style, became a comprehensive Provincial University, and since 1963 has remained an independent University federated with it daughter university, the University of Windsor.

The Board of Governors of Assumption extends most sincere gratitude to Fr. Paul Rennick for his service to the University, and congratulations and a warm welcome to Frs. Thomas Rosica and Leo Walsh.

In response to his appointment, Fr. Rosica said: “While celebrating its past achievements this Catholic University in the Basilian tradition looks forward to building upon the rich theological, cultural, and interdisciplinary endeavours that constitute its distinguished history. I pledge close cooperation with the University of Windsor, the Canadian Church, the Diocese of London and the excellent Catholic institutions in the London diocese: St. Peter’s Seminary, St. Peter’s Institute, King’s College and Brescia College in London, as well as with the Catholic School Boards in the Windsor-Essex area. Assumption University will be known for its dynamic Catholic chaplaincy to the University of Windsor. We will draw from the creative energy of the Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation as we serve the important mission of Assumption University.”
