Spring/Summer 2025 Updates

Spring and Summer 2025

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your interest in Assumption University – Windsor’s founding university .

During the Spring/Summer academic term, we have 15 graduate students enrolled in directed reading and major paper courses. The topics the students are studying are diverse and include, bioethics; the Church and women; the Maronite Church; the Church Fathers; and foundations in theology. We are pleased to see such a strong interest in our graduate program, which is continuing to grow rapidly. Thank you to Dr. Heejung Cho and Dr. Moira McQueen for their work in supervising these courses.

In the Fall 2025 term, we will be offering a new topic course called, Catholicism and Marginalization. The course will explore how the Church can get better at including communities who have often felt without a voice, including women, immigrants, the poor and unhoused, refugees, LGBTQ+ and racialized communities. There are several scholarships available for the Fall 2025 term for those who are enrolled or admitted to the program by August 1, 2025. For those interested in learning more about our academic programs, please email registrar@assumptionu.ca.

We continue with our strong community work during the spring and summer months. On June 19, 2025, Sandwich First Baptist Church and Assumption University hosted a Juneteenth Celebration on June 19, 2025 at Westview Freedom Academy at 7:00 PM. Juneteenth marks the abolition of slavery in the United States. There was a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, songs, recitation of poetry, and a panel of experts. In addition, traditional red velvet cake was served to honour the day.

Our annual Red Mass will be held on October 14, 2025 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 5:00 PM. This service honours members of the legal profession from all religious backgrounds. It is a custom for the hosts of the Red Mass to welcome friends from various religious and spiritual traditions. This year, Mr. Peter Hrastovec will receive the St. Thomas More Gold Medal for his distinguished legal and community contributions. Our Chancellor, Bishop Ronald Fabbro, CSB will be our celebrant. Again, all are welcome to join this special Mass.

As we close the academic year and look toward a new one, I thank you all for your support of Assumption University. We have many exciting academic programs and events coming in 2025-26 year. Feel free to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to keep apprised on our work. Have an enjoyable summer.

Sincerely,

John Cappucci, Ph.D.

President and Vice-Chancellor
